Moulin Rouge! The Musical is headed to the West Coast. The new Broadway smash based on Baz Luhrmann's hit film will make its Los Angeles debut at the Hollywood Pantages Theatre as part of the 2020-2021 Broadway in Hollywood season. The musical will run from October 13, 2021 through January 2, 2022.
Featuring a book by John Logan, Moulin Rouge! The Musical tells the story of an ambitious, lovesick writer named Christian and a dazzling, entrancing chanteuse named Satine. Their lives collide at the Moulin Rouge with its many characters including the host of the Moulin Rouge, Harold Zidler; the brilliant, starving artist Toulouse-Lautrec; the greatest tango dancer—and gigolo—in all of Paris, Santiago; the tempting Nini; and The Duke of Monroth, the wealthy and entitled patron of the club who thinks he can buy anything he wants, including love. The musical features hit pop music from the past 50 years.
The Broadway creative team will repeat their work in Los Angeles, including director Alex Timbers, choreographer Sonya Tayeh and musical supervisor Justin Levine. Casting will be announced at a later date.
The 2020-2021 Broadway in Hollywood season will also include the 2019 Tony-winning revival of Oklahoma! (November 3-22, 2020), The Cher Show (March 23-April 11, 2021), the Tony-nominated musical Tootsie (April 13-May 2, 2021), Disney's new staging of Aida (May 13-June 5, 2021), Pretty Woman: The Musical (June 8-27, 2021) and the Tony-winning hit The Lion King (June 25-September 5, 2021).
